Ironworkers Union and IMPACT

The International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers Union, AFL-CIO (IW), is a proud trade association whose beginnings go back to the 1890s. The IW represents 120,000 members in North America who work on bridges, structural steel, ornamental, architectural, and miscellaneous metals, rebar, and in shops. Our work is found on nearly every major construction project, such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Sears Tower, St. Louis Arch, Oil Sands Plant Expansion in Alberta, World Trade Center, and the Freedom Tower.

IMPACT — the Ironworker Management Progressive Action Cooperative Trust — expands job opportunities for Ironworkers and their Contractors. IMPACT is overseen by a board of trustees composed of an equal number of labor and management representatives. IMPACT members are Ironworker Locals and Signatory Contractors who are committed to increasing the competitiveness and market share of the union ironworking industry. The partnership is designed to:

  • Provide a forum for Ironworkers and contractors to address mutual concerns
  • Encourage reasonable, balanced solutions
  • Provide the region with a national network of IMPACT Regional Advisory Boards
  • Promote discussion of issues affecting the industry as a whole
  • Enable the creation of effective strategies for resolving concerns
  • Create opportunities for the ironworking industry
  • Expand job opportunities through progressive and innovative cooperative programs
